Hungering Roots
The purpose of this document is to take the scenes from The Silt Verses roleplaying game, and to attempt to convert them to work mechanially and thematically in the setting of NightSky.
Crumbling tenements
The tenements are a neutral place, insulated from the world by thickets of sickly trees.
- The residents all know each other by sight, if not by name. Many of the residents have lived in the same apartment for decades.
- Information about the history and activities of the surrounding area can be gleaned from the residents, if you can earn their trust.
- A hideout can be staked here in the ruined building, if you can remain concealed from the residents.
Events:
- The smell of rot fills the air from somewhere nearby. Hidden amongst thickets of weeds lies the bloated carcass of a rabbit.
- A scraggly cat stalks a sparrow across a raised concrete walkway.
Signs of recent habitation are everywhere. Footprints scuffed through layers of grit, fresh trash, the faint whistle of a kettle heard through multiple walls.
Further ideas:
- A security guard, hired by the new owners, living here. He is shunned and ignored by the residents.
Peer through a window
The outside of the window is coated in a thick, grimy film.
Smearing your hand across the window reveals the inside of a dimly-lit kitchen, with a kettle on the stove, and a slice of living room through a doorway. You think you see a movement. While you peer inside, the front door opens suddenly, and a woman steps out with a crowbar and a scowl. “What do you think you’re doing!?” she shrieks, advancing menacingly. “Leave us alone!”. This is the Indignant Chemist.
Knock on a door
Silence, a long creak, and then thumping footsteps grow louder. A pause, a metallic rattle, and the door begins to open, stopping again almost immediately. Peering through the narrow gap you see an older man, thin and unkempt. “Whaddayawant?”, he barks gruffly, brow crumpled with suspicion.
Behind him, through the gap, you see glimpses of a wood-panelled hallway, a fabric lampshade, and the corner of a dusty bookshelf. The reek of stale tobacco is overpowering. This is the Frail Machinist.
Investigate the fallen building
Half-tilted, a ground floor wall gave out, the floor is aggressively tilted and the upper floors are open to the sky on two sides. A fire escape allows ingress sideways along the sloped wall and into the upper two floors. The lowest floor has been crushed beneath the weight of the floors above.
